Thar Yar, Yangon
Myanmar
Short History of the House
Hlaing Thar Yar is a large town
also called Industrial city in the Yangon Division. It hosts many factories and
the inhabitants originate from different parts of Myanmar attracted by the
possibility of work. Many are people from the Ayeyarwady Delta who migrated
here after Nargis Cyclone in 2008. Therefore, the people vary and live in small
houses or rented rooms. Among these people, live our catholic families
scattered where they could find a place to live in.
The Sisters were for several
years eying places for a new foundation in the Yangon Division. In 2008 CycloneNargis caused havoc. A large number of
villages in the Ayeyarwady Delta were washed away with all the people and their
houses. The survivors had no home, food or water and were physically and
psychologically affected. The Sisters rushed to the area near HlaingThaYar and
started a massive project of attending to the immediate needs of people,
building small wooden or bamboo houses in safer places and assuring education
to many children and young people through scholarships.
It was this event that brought
the Sisters to Hlaing Thar Yar Zone and put them in contact with the Church
there especially in ShwePyi Thar Parish so as to carry out a coordinated rescue
work together.
The situation of many young women
and children in the area after Nargis cyclone was decisive for the Sisters to
start work for them. When meeting the
then Bishop of Yangon, Charles Bo SDB (now Cardinal) suggested to search for
land in HlaingThaYar where the Salesian Fathers were about to establish
themselves and were already carrying out liturgical services in a small place
every Sunday.
The
Sisters welcomed the suggestion and in October 2010, while searching for a
parcel of land for a community, they started collaborating with the Salesian
Parish Priest for Sunday catechesis, liturgical animation and family visits
travelling to and from Yangon Community. A parcel of land was purchased in
Hlaing Thar Yar and construction of a building that would host a few Sisters
and a Kindergarten were built during the year 2014-15.
On 9th
June 2015 three Sisters, members of Auxilium Community, established a presence
in HlaingThaYar with the Church’s blessing through Cardinal Charles Bo SDB and
above all with much faith in Christ Jesus Who called them and sent them to
bring the Good News to poor youth in the area. The Canonical erection of a
community on the site came about on May 18, 2016. The house is dedicated to our founder
"S. Giovanni Bosco”.
