NEWRI HOLDS SUSTAINABLE WATER MANAGEMENT SEMINAR
On the 20th of August 2019, Sr. Maria Goretti Thuzar Aung
and Sr. Elizabeth Phyu Phyu Aung(FMA CMY) participated at the International Seminar
on the “Sustainable Water Management” in Sahid Jaya Hotel in Yogyakarta,
Indonesia. It was a Seminar that gathered around 70 participants from the
different Southeast Asian countries and some university students who are
working in the field of environmental development in Indonesia.
The seminar began at 8:30 am and finished at 3:00 pm. The
international seminar was honored by welcome speeches and the presence of Dr.
Ir. Mochamad Basuki Hadimuljono, Minister of Public Works, Indonesia, Prof.
Chafid Fandeli, the Rector of Institut Teknologi Yogjakarta, Prof. Shane Snyder, Executive Director of –
Nanyang Environment Water Research Institute (NEWRI) from Singapore.
After the welcome speeches from the Minister and professors, there was
a short tea break. After which Dr. Ir. Danis Hidayat Sumadilaga, the Directorate
General of Human Settlements Ministry of Public Works presented on the
“Environmental Challenges & Governance” in Indonesia. After that Prof.
Shane Snyder presented the “Emerging Environmental Challenges and Solutions in
world’s Fastest Growing Region”.
The welcome speech was then followed by several presentations by Assistant
Professor, Dr. Surapol Padungthon from Thailand on “the Community Battle
Against Liver Fluke; Dr. Shameen Jinadasa from Sri Lanka on “Saving lakes – the
Urban Socio-Cultural and Technological Perspective; Sr. Elizabeth Phyu Phyu
Aung FMA on “Clean Water Access for Urban Slum in Myanmar”; Mr. Agus Suyanto
from Institut Teknologi Yogyakarta on “Development of Clean Water Supply in
Gunungkidul Regency”. An open forum was then conducted after all the
presentations were done in order to entertain questions from the audience. It
was then followed by lunch.
In the afternoon the Indonesia context showcased its environmental
solutions featuring the “Environmental Monitoring”, “Utilization of spatial
modeling in Water-related disaster Management”, “Wetlands for safe and
eco-friendly Mine Voids solution” and “Water Management in Karst Region”. These
were presented by the different speakers and followed by the question and
answer portion.
The seminar successfully ended with a concluding speech of Prof.
Chafid Fandeli and Prof. Shane Snyder.
Indeed, it was a great occasion to be together, with men and women
of good will who dedicate themselves for the wellbeing of others and the care
for the environment.
